MOLES

Mole Mapping

Mole mapping is a comprehensive surveillance program that visually evaluates and monitors the size, color and overall appearance of moles. Since early detection is essential when treating skin cancer, inspecting a patient’s every mole is necessary for Dr. Prystowsky to detect abnormalities that may indicate the presence of evolving cancerous growths. Mole mapping is highly recommended for patients at elevated risk for melanoma. For patients with a history of many unusual moles or melanoma, full body photography utilizing a professional medical photographer is arranged. This full photographic record is used with each skin screening exam.

Screen for Cancer

While most moles are not medically concerning, it is important to screen for cancer and other skin conditions. Screenings are usually recommended on a yearly basis in order to catch abnormalities in their earliest stages. In Dr. Prystowsky’s practice, moles of concern are photographed with high resolution digital cameras. If suspicious lesions are found during an exam, additional testing is recommended.

Aesthetic Removal

Depending on depth, location, color, patient skin type, age and other factors, treatment for benign but unattractive birthmarks may take the form of superficial planing (tangential shave without sutures) or complete incisional excision with sutures.
