Many patients with skin ulcers, burns and other types of wounds face difficulty with the healing process for these troubling wounds, especially if the patient is diabetic. There are several different treatment options available for wounds resistant to conventional therapies. Some of these may include creams, ointments, synthetic skin grafts and other therapies that promote natural healing within the skin to avoid wound complications.
At Janet H. Prystowsky, M.D., P.C., we are proud to offer patients many advanced solutions to their wound healing problems. It is important for wounds to remain clean and free of debris and bacteria in order to properly heal and prevent infection, so proper dressings that are changed on a regular basis are essential. We provide a treatment regimen tailored to be conducive to healing a patient's wound and leading to a quick and efficient recovery.
Age spots, also called "liver" spots, are flat brown patches on the skin that have darkened in color ("pigmented") after exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light. They are commonly seen in people over the age of 40 on areas of skin that are frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the hands, shoulders, forearms, face and forehead. Age spots may look unattractive, but are typically painless and harmless, although on occasion a melanoma can look like a benign age spot, which may lead to a delay in the diagnosis of melanoma cancers. When in doubt, it is best to have a dermatologist evaluate questionable spots on the skin.
Sebaceous cysts, commonly known as just cysts, are small, closed sacs that contain solid or fluid material and can be found anywhere on the skin. They develop from an inflamed abnormal hair follicle, and require treatment to prevent it from enlarging, which may lead to rupturing under the skin.
Cyst removal is done through surgical excision. A small incision is made in the area of the cyst and then the cyst and surrounding tissue will be removed to ensure complete excision. A local anesthetic is used for this procedure. Most cysts do not return when thoroughly removed. Some patients are left with a small scar after a cyst is removed, which can be further treated with a reconstructive treatment, although most scars will fade over time.
Full-body skin exams are an important tool in screening patients for benign or cancerous lesions that they may not have been able to see or recognize on their own. From head to toe and back to front, we inspect the skin for any suspicious growths. This quick and painless preventive measure is an invaluable tool in the early detection of skin cancer, as well as many other dermatological conditions. When skin growths of concern are detected, a biopsy may be recommended or a digital photograph may be taken for future comparison at subsequent examinations. Dr. Prystowsky uses magnification and surgical lighting to see the skin in detail. Dermoscopy provides even greater detail and is used to help determine whether a biopsy is necessary.
As our skin ages, it loses fat and elasticity, becomes drier, and starts to sag, forming wrinkles. Years of sun exposure causes damage, sometimes invisible or barely visible and sometimes harmful. Our office treats signs and problems associated with aging skin, including age and liver spots (lentigines), wrinkles, telangiectasias (broken capillaries), bruising, cherry angiomas, assorted skin diseases (shingles, leg ulcers, seborrheic dermatitis) and cancerous and pre-cancerous problems including actinic and seborrheic keratoses, melanoma, basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Common elective procedures are BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, laser rejuvenation and chemical peels.
Patients over 70 develop thinner and more fragile skin. By the time patients are in their eighties or older, skin tears from minor bumps may become a debilitating condition requiring frequent repairs. Dr. Prystowsky is very experienced in repairing these open skin tears and restoring your skin.
