When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. These lines can make you look older, sad, angry or tired. Dermal fillers can help to prevent you from deepening these lines during natural facial movements, and minimize these marks of aging, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved materials and safe for use by most patients. Many of the fillers are made from substances found naturally in the body, or synthetically made to mimic natural substances or stimulate collagen production. These fillers are injected directly into the skin of the targeted area to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. At Janet H. Prystowsky, M.D., P.C., we offer patients several different dermal filler options in order to provide the best possible results for their individual needs.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly purified protein injected into the skin to relax the muscles that cause certain kinds of wrinkles. While BOTOX® can treat select medical conditions, such as excessive sweating, it is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes, primarily to reduce wrinkles on the face and neck. Although some discomfort occurs with the injections, it is very brief and only lasts a few seconds for each injection.
The best candidates for BOTOX® are men and women seeking an enhanced appearance with fewer wrinkles. In addition, it is important that those seeking treatment are in good physical health, are not pregnant or nursing, and do not have a neuromuscular disorder. People seeking BOTOX® injections should have realistic expectations regarding this procedure's abilities and should discuss their desired goals with Dr. Prystowsky beforehand.
BOTOX® injections are administered by Dr. Prystowsky using a very fine needle. The complete set of injections only takes a few minutes and requires no anesthetic. Most day-to-day activities can be resumed immediately afterwards with minor restrictions for the first 5 hours after receiving the injection to allow the BOTOX® to set. Wrinkles begin to fade within 24 hours, with continued improvement over the next 5 days.
Side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are rare and are usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects are headaches and temporary redness or bruising of the skin at the site of injection. Any risk of complication can be reduced by choosing a qualified and experienced physician such as Dr. Prystowsky. Dr. Prystowsky co-authored the landmark article Botulinum Toxin A for Hyperkinetic Facial Lines: Results of a Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study (Plast. Reconstr. Surg. 94:94, 1994).
Radiesse is a synthetic injectable filler that has been approved by the FDA to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles, folds and creases around the nose and mouth by stimulating the natural production of collagen in the skin. This product is made of microspheres composed of calcium hydroxylapatite within a water-based gel and is made from minerals similar to what makes up our bones. Radiesse can be injected directly into the skin with no need for pre-testing.
Radiesse is most effective in reducing the appearance of smile lines, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and other wrinkles around the nose and mouth. The results of this procedure are visible immediately after the injection and can last for up to a year or even longer. With continued treatment, patients will require fewer and fewer injections.
Juvéderm Injectable Gel is a safe, effective gel that restores volume to the skin and smoothes away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. The Juvéderm gel is made of hyaluronic acid with a smooth consistency, allowing for easy injections and instant, natural-looking results. There is no pre-testing needed for this procedure.
Topical or injectable anesthesia may be used during this procedure to numb the treatment area and minimize any potential discomfort. The results of this procedure are available right away and can usually last for 6 months to one year, the longest results available from any hyaluronic acid product.
