This week we added the CUTERA Genesis Plus laser to the practice for the treatment of nail fungus. We expect that with 2-3 treatments per year toenail fungus will be cleared in close to 70% of patients. This treatment allows you to avoid taking oral medications that can have severe side effects. Topical therapies alone are notoriously weak or ineffective. We tried out this laser last year in the practice and found it was tolereated well by patients and were pleased with the results. Please call the office for further information and to set up a consultation. The laser is a great alternative to pills and topical nail preparations! Once the nails are clear, periodic laser treatments can be done to maintain clear nails.

We have a new posting on Dermoscopy, which is a great way to see what is going on in a mole without doing a biopsy.

Many patients report that they are taking fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) either in a prescription form or over the counter as a nutritional supplement. Ads are common in magazines. It seems many patients are under the impression that they should be taking fish oil whether their physician has recommended it or not. Unfortunately, fish oil increases the tendency to bleed which can be a significant problem even during minor office based surgical procedures. Fish oil decreases both the ability of platelets to function and clotting proteins to work. We advise patients to discontinue fish oil for two weeks prior to surgical procedures. It is important to review your supplements with all of your physicians to avoid complications. Be sure to ask your doctor to determine whether or not it is approriate for you to take supplements as a magazine ad is not your best source of medical information.

We have recently added Pelleve treatments to our cosmetic treatment program. Pelleve is a radiofrequency treatment that produces smoother, tighter skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. (It is an FDA cleared treatment.) It works by heating the deep layers of your skin which causes collagen in your skin to contract. The results is an improvement in skin quality, firmness and tightness you can see and feel. You may see results immediately after one treatment with improvement lasting for up to 6 months. There is no anesthesia or downtime. The procedure will cause a deep warming sensation in the area of the skin being treated. No anesthetic is required. For further information, schedule a consultation for Pelleve and Dr. Prystowsky will tell you more about it.

It will not be long before the warm weather arrives! Now is a great time to get laser hair removal from areas that bother you such as the the underarms, bikini and legs for women and the back and shoulders for men. Adding suction to the hair laser treatments has reduced the discomfort for many patients. If you previously tried laser hair removal and abandoned it due to discomfort consider signing up for the new approach to laser hair removal! Once your skin gets tan, the procedure will have to wait until the tan fades, so this is to do before you go out in the sun, even if you wear sunscreeen.
What about those spider veins? Laser and sclerotherapy for spider veins should be done before the end of April so that most of the discoloration from treatment has a chance to fade before it is time for shorts and bathing suits.
